'Heritage extremists' damaging city
Lancashire Evening Post | 9th March 2010

The chairman of a business lobbying group has accused "heritage extremists" of derailing Preston's bid to regenerate the city centre.
Frank McKenna, of the Downtown Preston in Business group, said that many projects to regenerate areas including the city's Flag Market and Winckley Square would be underway but for a "a small but vocal bunch of cynics".

He adds that the Downtown group will launch the next stage of its City Thinking campaign, aimed at boosting public support for regeneration plans, later this week.

Mr McKenna said: "We have heritage extremists trying to win listed status for the monstrosity that is the city bus station; neighbouring local authorities objecting to the £700m regeneration of the city centre; and a small but vocal bunch of cynics who I'm sure would
find something wrong with a proposal to pave the streets of Preston with gold.

"It's about time that those who are positive about the city's future and want to get on and do things worked more closely together."
